We Nailed It! Atlanta Habitat for Humanity Sponsored Home Build

By: Shannon Watkins, Proposal & Account Coordinator

On April 14, 2018, Engle Martin & Associates, Envista Forensics and Cor Partners partnered with Chubb Insurance and RSUI to sponsor an Atlanta Habitat for Humanity home build. Volunteers from each group joined hands to assist with the 8th and final build for the house located on 1317 Plaza Avenue SW in Atlanta. The agenda for the day included cleaning the home’s interior, paint touch-ups, landscaping, and completing the home’s final punch list.

Our volunteers joined the ranks of the 12,000 – 15,000 volunteers that assist Atlanta Habitat for Humanity each year. This volunteer network provides more than 130,000 hours of service to build and renovate 50-60 houses annually saving Atlanta Habitat more than $2 million in labor costs each year.

Since 1983, Atlanta Habitat has built and renovated more than 1,370 homes primarily in the city of Atlanta and Fulton County. These homes house over 5,500 individual family members making Atlanta one of the most successful Habitat for Humanity cities in the nation.

In addition to the volunteers’ donation of time, the homeowners also use ‘sweat-equity’ as part of the down payment for their homes. Each Atlanta Habitat homebuyer is required to coordinate for the completion of at least 250 volunteer hours within a year from the date they move into their home. Of the 250 hours required, 100 hours must be completed by members of the household, and up to 150 hours can be completed by friends and family. These hours provide time to build their own homes as well as participating at other scheduled home builds and volunteering at other Habitat events.

At the April 14  build, our volunteers worked side-by-side with the homeowners, a hardworking single father, Anthony, and his son, Antonio.  Anthony spends most of his time working as an oil technician at a local car dealership, but when he and Antonio have spare time, they enjoy spending it together, particularly playing sports. This Atlanta Habitat home provides Anthony with the solid foundation of homeownership that will assist with his return to college to complete his bachelor’s degree while raising Antonio.

Following the build, the home’s dedication ceremony was celebrated by all and a special surprise cake was presented to Antonio who celebrated his seventh birthday with everyone in attendance. The gift of this home is sure to provide him with a birthday to remember.
